Format Suggestions

Wiki Articles are normally formatted with an Introduction, followed by a listing of content in different Article Categories, followed by the Article, broken down into Article Categories. Within the article, there are links that point to other topics that are in the Wiki. For example, in the Layperson’s Guide to California Water Laws introduction, you bring up SB98. A link would go from the Guide’s Introduction to the SB98 article which has lots of information on SB98. Instructions on linking follow.

Editing Documents

Editing pages require just a click of the edit tab located above the Article. Editing is done in a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) Microsoft Word like editor.

Leave your mouse over any unfamiliar buttons to see Tool Tips on their use.

Use the Format menu to select the heading styles, etc.

Links and New Articles

The foundation of a successful Wiki is articles linked to each other so that if you are talking about Charles Hursh, a 20th century hydrologist, who worked with E.F. Brater to study the effects of removing forests along rivers on river ecosystems, you could link to the 20th century hydrologist and E.F. Brater topics so that users can easily find out more about E.F. Brater or a list of 20th century hydrologists. These are called Internal Links. An external link links to a page outside of the California Water Impact Network Wiki system. They are both created by clicking the world icon Image:link1.jpgwith a chain link on it. You can select text within the editor and then click on the icon or just click on it. It will bring up a dialog that will allow you to begin typing a topic and then suggest topics that already exist. You can choose from the list of topics or create a new one by continuing to type. You can also enter a URL (http://www.somename.com) for external links.

About Categories

Categories make it easier for Search Engines and Users to find content. They are assigned by inserting an internal link in the same manner described above at the bottom of the page to the desired Category in the following format Category:Category_Name

The underlined text is what you would change into your category. This link will cause the page to be listed in the Category listing.

Inserting Images and Files

Images

To insert an image into a page, click on the image button in the editor. Image:image1.jpgThis will bring up a dialogue box where you type the file name (really any filename, just make sure the extension matches, also, as you type a list of images with close filenames is populated. You can not name two images alike.) and are able to set the image attributes. When complete click OK.

Save your Article and click on the red image link located in your article. You will be taken to an upload page and be able to upload your image. When your image is completely uploaded, return to the page where you inserted it and the image should appear within the article.

Files

To upload a non image file to the Wiki, click Upload file from the Toolbox menu. For Source Name, browse to the file and then select Open, then Select Upload file like you would upload an Image. Link to it from a page by typing the following into the Article… [[Media:Filename.extension|media:filename.extension]] and saving the article.

In other words you will be able to link to the Guidebook from anywhere within the site by linking to [[Media:Guidebook.pdf|media:guidebook.pdf]] and then clicking save.

Deleting Pages

Normal users cannot permanently delete a wiki page. This is an entirely deliberate design feature of the Media Wiki program. Every kind of editing operation can be reverted by any other authorized user, and that includes resurrecting deleted content. This is a precaution so that recovery of accidentally edited pages, etc. can happen. Deleting a page should be the last option after editing it to resurrect what ever is wrong with it.

'Sysop' (Sunny Day Online) users are able to delete a page semi-permanently because we have access to the database. Typically sysops might look for delete labels, and do a proper delete on these pages, after a period of time. If for some reason you need a page to be deleted more quickly than that, you will need to contact (http://www.sunnydayonline.com/contact) a sysop directly to request this.
